During the Golden Age of radio, Jane Froman’s incredible voice captivated listeners and made her America’s preeminent songstress. Classically trained for a career in opera, she opted instead to bring her silken voice and skillful technique to popular music. In 1943, as Jane was en route to entertain troops for the USO, her plane crashed, leaving her with severe injuries. Two years later, still on crutches, she returned to Europe to sing for the GIs and to visit military hospitals.
Her amazing comeback was portrayed in the movie With a Song in My Heart, leading to her own television show in 1952. For four decades, Jane Froman introduced and promoted the songs that became known as the Great American Songbook. Successful impresario Billy Rose, when asked to name the 10 best female singers in America, reportedly said, “Jane Froman and 9 others.”
This definitive biography, based on many years of research plus Barbara Seuling’s personal knowledge of Jane Froman, provides in-depth coverage of the star’s life (1907-1980) and continues with discussion of her musical legacy and ongoing fan base. The book includes index, appendix, and over 100 personal photographs, many never before published.
